To celebrate David Bowie's 68th birthday last week, illustrator Helen Green created an animated gif of his hairstyles through the years. The unique illustrations , in both black and white and colour stills, feature the British singer's iconic looks between 1964 and 2014 in 29 frames, which are available to print through Society6 for $15 (approx. £9) Green shared the gif on Tumblr with a simple message that read "Happy Birthday David Bowie" and it had more than 40,000 responses. She  told The Independent: "The idea for the GIF came about whilst listening to Bowie's latest career-spanning compilation 'Nothing Has hanged'. "I felt inspired to create a short visual journey through many of Bowie's styles and guises, from young Davie Jones in 1964 to David Bowie in 2014, it's my little tribute to how he's fascinated us over the years."  Bowie has many memorable hair and make-up moments. How to forget his boy-next-door image for the 1972's androgyne Ziggy Stardust with his Suzi Fussey–cut and coloured flaming red hair or his bleach blond hair from 1993. He once described himself as an artist “who tries to capture the rate of change,” and have done so utilising shifts in hair and makeup with unprecedented speed. This celebratory gif encapsulates 50 years of Bowie's looks, from his iconic Ziggy look to his permanent curls. Happy belated Birthday Bowie.

First carpentry cohort gets certified

MR TITUS Tan had always been interested in woodwork, but a dearth of carpentry courses led him to pursue a diploma in information technology instead.

After working as an IT systems engineer for three years, he realised his "second choice" was not for him. He enrolled in a creative craftsman apprenticeship scheme and fulfilled his dream in April when he became a furniture craftsman at interior construction firm Facility Link.

"I'm a hands-on person," Mr Tan, 26, said. "I feel a great sense of achievement when I complete a product."

Mr Tan was among 18 trainees, aged 24 to 66, who yesterday became the first graduates of the six-month place-and-train programme.

Set up by the labour movement, the Singapore Workforce Development Agency and the Singapore Furniture Industries Council (SFIC) in February, the programme trains apprentices in carpentry skills.

It guarantees them a minimum starting pay of $1,600 with pledging companies upon completion of training. And as they become more skilled, their salaries can rise to more than $3,000.

A new carpentry training campus at Yishun Industrial Park A to house the programme was also officially opened yesterday. The 418 sq m facility, approved by the Polytechnic of Western Australia, has two classrooms and eight work stations that can be used by 32 people at a time.

The programme and campus are part of a larger move to promote the traditional trade of carpentry among Singaporeans.

"Singapore faces a shortage of skilled local carpenters," said Mr Neo Sia Meng, chairman of the SFIC Institute.

"By providing a conducive learning environment and comprehensive education at the (campus), we hope to introduce more young Singaporeans to the art of furniture craftsmanship."

There are nearly 20,000 workers in the furniture trade but no official figures for the number of carpenters, most of whom are from Malaysia and China.

The lack of interest among locals in a profession many consider arduous and low-paying is especially worrying, given that the furniture industry is expanding.

According to the SFIC, the industry has a projected worth of $6.34 billion this year, up from $5.74 billion in 2012.

Singapore also contributes 1.05 per cent of the world's furniture production.

Labour chief Lim Swee Say, who was at yesterday's campus opening, said the traditional solution to "less popular" jobs like carpentry has been to hire more foreigners.

But he warned against such an approach, saying: "In time to come, we may lose that skill set in our local workforce."

Pointing to the efforts to promote carpentry, he said: "At the end of the day, we believe every job can be transformed into a better job, every worker can be transformed into a better worker."

So far, 22 companies have pledged to take part in the carpentry programme, and about 160 more Singaporeans are expected to undergo the training in the next 1 1/2 years.

WDA Programmes To Give More Job And Training Guidance For Workers
More career coaches and quality training providers to help them move up ladder

Workers will get more help in choosing jobs and charting their careers through a range of programmes by national training body Singapore Workforce Development Agency (WDA).
There will be more career coaches, a new online portal with job information as well as quality training providers to help them move up in their careers, Deputy Prime Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam said yesterday.
Some of these moves will start as early as secondary school to help prepare Singaporeans for the future needs of the economy.
"Even when you're in secondary school, it's good to have a vague idea of what your strengths are, what your aptitudes are, what you might be interested in," he said.
"Not choosing a course based on what your A-level scores qualify you for, what your GPAs (grade point averages) qualify you for - choosing a course based on your interest, what you feel you will be interested enough to keep learning, to keep progressing on, and to apply yourself with passion in."
WDA chief executive Ng Cher Pong said the aim is to get individuals to "take responsibility and ownership for their own career and skills planning".
To do this, a one-stop job and training portal will be launched.
This website will provide information on jobs and advice on how workers can progress in their careers with training. Workers will get a better idea of their strengths and interests through self-profiling tests and games at the Lifelong Learning Institute in Paya Lebar.
More career coaches will be hired to ensure that workers get career guidance and advice on training. There will also be more online courses rolled out so that workers can learn at their own pace while juggling their work duties.
WDA will work with employers to roll out structured on-the-job training programmes for workers. Firms will be asked to develop standardised benchmarks for workers' skills. This will help guide workers in upgrading skills and charting their career paths.
WDA will determine if workers meet these benchmarks through "application-based and outcomes- driven" tests, said Mr Ng.
Mr Gilbert Tan, chief executive of the National Trades Union Congress' training arm e2i, agreed that training workers to pick up skills needed by the industry will convince bosses to give them time to go for courses.
"Training should be conducive ... to business operations, especially for small and medium-sized enterprises," he said.

LONDON (REUTERS) - British police investigating allegations of historical sex crimes against Cliff Richard, one of Britain's best-known entertainers, have said their inquiry into the singer had "increased significantly in size".

Officers raided the home of Richard, 74, in Berkshire, west of London, last August, when he was on holiday, over allegations which dated back to the 1980s and involved an under-age boy.

Richard was later interviewed under caution but not arrested or charged with any crime. He said on Wednesday all the allegations were "absurd and untrue".

David Crompton, the chief constable of South Yorkshire Police, said his force's inquiry had now expanded.

"This is an investigation which has increased significantly in size since its inception," he wrote in a letter to the chairman of parliament's Home Affairs Committee which was written two weeks ago but only made public on Wednesday.

"Sir Cliff Richard's lawyers are aware that there is more than one allegation," the letter added.

"It would be premature and potentially misleading to predict a likely date when it will be concluded. However, we are progressing as swiftly as possible."

Richard, born Harry Webb in 1940 and in his earlier career referred to as Britain's Elvis Presley, has had 14 No. 1 singles in Britain and is the only singer to have topped the UK singles chart in five consecutive decades, from the 1950s to the 1990s.

He shot to stardom in 1958 with Move It and cemented his reputation as a heart-throb with starring roles in film musicals The Young Ones in 1961 and Summer Holiday in 1963.

With his backing group The Shadows, Richard was one of Britain's most successful performers in the pre-Beatles era of the late 1950s and early 1960s.

"I have no idea where these absurd and untrue allegations come from," Richard said in a statement.

"I have never, in my life, assaulted anyone and I remain confident that the truth will prevail."

The raid on his house last year was filmed by BBC cameras after the broadcaster was given advance warning, leading to criticism from lawmakers who described that co-operation as"inept" and causing "irreparable damage" to the singer's reputation.

$10k raised online here to help Irish woman in coma

SINGAPORE - Around $10,000 has been raised locally to help Irish national Lisa Orsi, who collapsed while on a trekking holiday in Indonesia. The 22-year-old was working at Bright Vision Hospital in Hougang as a physiotherapist, and she had been in Singapore for a year before the accident. 

She lost consciousness last Friday while hiking up a volcano in Indonesia, and was first warded at a hospital there, according to The Belfast Telegraph, a Northern Irish newspaper. 

She was diagnosed as having suffered severe brain damage from hypoxia, or a lack of oxygen, and was moved to the Singapore General Hospital on Wednesday.

According to a Facebook post by her mother, Mrs Sharon Orsi, she has severe altitude sickness and is undergoing various medical tests. "Thank you all for your support, encouragement and beautiful words," said Mrs Orsi. "They are giving our family great strength and the will to keep going."

Altitude sickness is typically caused by the low oxygen levels found at altitudes above 3,000m. It is not uncommon, even among trekkers who are very fit. The condition is characterised by headaches and nausea but, in severe cases, sufferers can lose consciousness.

An online fund-raiser to help pay for Ms Orsi's medical expenses was set up by the Singapore Gaelic Lions, an athletic association to which she belongs. The club has also raised around £19,800 (S$41,500) on a separate site that cannot be used by those residing in Singapore. The call for donations was shared by the Singapore Physiotherapy Association, of which Ms Orsi is also a member.

"She's really kind and loving and funny, and she's full of energy," said Ms Sinead Carr, who is a childhood friend of Ms Orsi and works as a speech therapist in Singapore. "Her heart is as golden as her hair, and she's a real live wire."
